Orthopaedic Surgical Services

Orthopaedic surgeons are physician specialists who focus on healing injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system – the body’s bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and tendons. Orthopaedic surgeons work with other healthcare professionals to ensure patients experience full recovery from surgery. They are also important members of the hospital’s Emergency Services team. For a listing of YRMC’s orthopaedic surgeons, visit Find a Doctor.

At YRMC, orthopaedic surgeons perform a variety of procedures, including:
    • Arthroscopy (Knee and Shoulder)
    • Anterior Approach Hip Arthroplasty (Total Hip Replacement)
    • Traumatic Fracture Repair (Broken Ankle, Foot, Leg and Upper Extremities – Humerus, Wrist, Elbow, Clavicle)
    • Total Knee Replacement

YRMC’s Orthopaedic Surgical Services has been recognized for exceptional quality in the U.S. by leading quality assessment organizations. In addition to our exceptional medical services and outcomes, YRMC also offers advanced technology all made possible by an accomplished healthcare team committed to clinical best practices in orthopaedics.

While our clinical commitment is noteworthy, we are just as proud of our efforts to foster a Total Healing Environment. We strive to care for all of our patients with compassion and respect.

Congratulations on planning for your recovery from joint replacement surgery. Research shows that pre-operative physical rehabilitation – called “prehabilitation” – improves strength and function following joint replacement.

YRMC sponsors Pre-Operative Joint Replacement Classes for people undergoing hip or knee replacement. You may want to explore undergoing a pre-surgical physical therapy assessment offered by Physical Rehabilitation Services before your surgery so you have the opportunity to build strength before the procedure. We also offer a Guided Imagery Class to help you relax before and after surgery.

Many people go home the day of their orthopaedic procedure. However, some surgeries require additional recovery time in the hospital. Your orthopaedic surgeon will talk to you about what you can expect post-operatively.

Your doctor will provide pre-operative instructions for you to follow. Prior to your arrival at the hospital, a YRMC registered nurse will call you to discuss all aspects of your surgery. This nurse is an excellent source of information that you may contact before and after your surgery. You even may meet this same nurse at YRMC when you arrive the day of your procedure!

Your physician will recommend post-operative therapy to help you re-build your strength and return to an active life. YRMC’s Physical Rehabilitation Services offers advanced orthopaedic rehabilitation from an experienced team of physical therapists and occupational therapists. Depending on your rehabilitation needs, you may even benefit from the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, the only one in western Yavapai County. Once you’re back on your feet, you may want to check out the fitness programs available through YRMC’s Preventive Medicine and Wellness Department.

Your orthopaedic surgeon will discuss the preferred anesthesia for your procedure and you’ll also hear from a YRMC anesthesiologist who will discuss your procedure and medical history. Together, you will decide on the best course of anesthesia.

Many orthopaedic procedures are “minimally invasive.” An advantage of this is that some of these procedures can be performed without general or spinal anesthesia. If this is the case, you won’t feel pain as topical numbing medicine may be used or you may be given an IV with medicine to help you relax.

Your family will find a comfortable Surgical Services waiting area, whether your orthopaedic surgery is taking place at YRMC East or YRMC West. These areas are staffed by friendly YRMC volunteers who will be happy to assist your family. Visit YRMC’s Cafeteria for meals, snacks and beverages and stop by the YRMC Gift Shop, too.

All children must be accompanied by an adult at the hospital. Also, during certain times of the year, visits by children may be restricted. You may want to call the hospital in advance to find out if restrictions are in place.

Contact YRMC’s Health Information Management Department to get copies of your medical records.

YRMC’s Patient Financial Services can help you with questions regarding your hospital bill.
