Visiting a Hospital Patient

Visitors play an important role in our Total Healing Environment. The care and support you offer can be added reassurance during your loved one’s stay at YRMC. Out of consideration for our patients, there are some guidelines we ask our visitors to observe:

  • If you have questions regarding visitation at YRMC, please call the hospital switchboard at (928) 445-2700.
  • For questions relating to visitation at YRMC’s Family Birthing Center, please call (928) 442-8800.
  • All visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms and given a procedural mask before they may enter the hospital. Visitors who fail the screening won’t be allowed to enter. All visitors will be expected to follow the same infection prevention precautions established by YRMC’s Infection Prevention Department.
  • To ensure the safety of our patients and staff, YRMC secures the facilities at 8:00 pm. For visitation after 8:00 pm, please enter the hospital through the Emergency Department entrances and remain in designated visiting areas.
  • Patients and family are encouraged to designate a family spokesperson to facilitate effective communication among extended family members and hospital staff.
  • If you are ill, please do not visit a patient in the hospital.
  • Let the patient know when to expect you and keep the visit brief.
  • Observe the patient’s diet plan. Food may only be brought in for a patient with the permission of the patient’s physician.
  • Flowers and plants are permitted in patient rooms in most situations as per CDC guidelines. Family members may be asked to take overly fragrant flowers home as they may trigger allergies. No flowers or plants are allowed in the critical care nursery rooms due to airborne/droplet infection concerns. No flowers or plants are allowed in the CVICU/ICU/PCU/MCU/PACU due to airborne/droplet infection concerns.
  • Respect a patient’s desire for privacy regarding his/her condition and be supportive of the patient and understanding of his/her fears and concerns.
  • Be considerate of other patients in the room.
  • Do not sit on the patient’s bed or other bed in the patient’s room.
  • Do not use the patient’s bathroom. Public bathrooms are located throughout the hospital.
  • We encourage you to wash and/or sanitize your hands before and after your visit. Visitors will be instructed to “wash or gel-in/wash or gel-out” when entering or leaving the patient’s room.
  • It is important to safeguard patients and children from exposure to any communicable diseases and infections. If children are ill, please do not bring them for a visit.
  • During certain times of the year, special restrictions regarding visitation for children are necessary. These will be posted.
  • Children must be attended by an adult at all times in all areas of the hospital.
  • If you plan to stay overnight with your family member, arrangements can be made for a meal tray, toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Visitors are invited to eat their meals in the hospital cafeteria, when open, or use the micro-markets that are available next to each cafeteria. Gift shops are also available at both hospital locations.
  • All patient rooms (except ICU/CCU units) have telephones. To reach the room directly, you can call the seven-digit number in the patient’s room or call the hospital switchboard at (928) 445-2700 and ask for the extension (the patient’s room number). For a patient in the ICU or CCU, you may call the nurses station and ask to speak with your family member or friend.
  • To encourage good health for our patients, visitors, medical staff, volunteers, and employees, all YRMC campuses are tobacco and smoke free. This includes the use of e-cigarettes. Tobacco use and smoking are not allowed on any YRMC property, including the parking lot and private streets within the campus boundaries.
  • Visitors and patients with service animals must make arrangements for their care.
  • Pastoral care services are offered to all patients, their families and friends according to their beliefs, preferences and religious tradition. The Chaplain of the Day is available on a 24-hour basis. In an emergency, your caregiver will call a chaplain or other faith leader at your request. If you want to see a chaplain and there is no emergency, please tell your nurse or leave a message at the nurses’ station.
  • We are fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers working in practically every area of the hospital, including the Information Desk and the Gift Shop. They are available to escort visitors if they need assistance finding their way around the hospital.
