Wireless localization

Typically, the day of surgery, a woman undergoing a lumpectomy will have a wire placed in the breast before surgery to help identify the cancer during the surgery. YRMC has a device that performs the same function, but without the wires. This device can be placed at any time before the surgery, in a procedure similar to a breast biopsy. Wireless localization is more precise than traditional wire placement. It’s also more convenient for patients and make surgery day a little less stressful.

 

Nurse navigator

YRMC understands a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Our nurse navigator is specially trained to help patients navigate the course of their breast cancer. 

The nurse navigator becomes involved when a woman has an abnormal mammogram requiring a biopsy. She offers education and answers questions about the process of undergoing a biopsy. After the biopsy results are ready, the nurse navigator again offers education and clarifies the next steps. 

If the biopsy uncovers cancer, our nurse navigator becomes an important contact and guide in coordinating appointments, educating and serving as the point person if questions or issues develop. 

Our nurse navigator is an excellent resource for every breast cancer patient. She can direct patients to resources that provide emotional, financial or physical support.
