On July 5 2005, Yavapai Regional Medical Center announced the creation of an Inpatient Palliative Care Service. Palliative Care is the comprehensive care and management of physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients with chronic, debilitating, life limiting or life threatening illnesses and their families.
With the addition of this program, YRMC joins some of the leading hospitals across the country offering this service. At the present time, only about 25-30% of the hospitals in the United States have an inpatient Palliative Care Service. This service is different from Hospice in that it assists patients and families early in their illness, where Hospice focuses on patients at the end of life. The service is provided by an interdisciplinary team comprised of physicians, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, social worker, and chaplain.
